This book is centered around the untimely death of a wife and mother named Caroline Thraxton. The story is told in three parts, through a total of 53 chapters. The chapters are all titled either “Deirdre” or “Theo,” as they alternate back and forth between the perspectives of Deirdre, Caroline's sister, and Theo, Caroline's husband.The story starts off a bit dark and depressing, as Deirdre has to attend her sister's funeral and greet the family, including her young nephew that just lost his mom. Then the mysterious note claiming that Caroline's death was not an accident starts Deirdre on a quest to determine what really happened. The chapters are written in the first person, with both of the main characters remembering events and antagonizing over details. Both of these characters are aggressive and temperamental, so there is quite a bit of tension as the plot develops. I didn't find the characters to be very likeable, but there were enough twists and action to keep the story somewhat interesting.While there are a few similarities between this book and the other suspense First Read this month, “Choose Me,” this one seems much darker; and I didn't enjoy reading it as much. In addition to the heart-wrenching scenes of three year old Teddy trying to understand his mom's death; there is abuse, domestic violence, and even sexual assault in the story. At times it was so depressing or infuriating that it made me question whether it was even worthwhile to finish the book. I did make it to the end, and the ending was decent, but overall I just felt like the story could have been told without some of these details.This one is hard for me to rate, because while the main plot was a decent mystery story, so much of the book along the way was uncomfortable or disturbing. Overall, I would have to give this one a 3/5, and suggest that if mystery/suspense is your preferred genre, you might want to try Choose Me this month instead. I love a good domestic thriller that grabs from the first page and doesn’t let go. This is one of those. I also love books that have well-done unreliable narrators… and this one has two! Unreliable narrators are hard to write well, but when it is done right, few other literary devices get you questioning what is real and what isn’t in a novel… and keep you turning the pages as you try to figure it all out. Both perspective characters keep you guessing, and the author throws in some excellent unexpected plot twists (though they completely make sense when you think about it afterward). The female MC gets a shocking email days after her beloved sister’s death—she knows she will die and who her killer will be… her husband, whom she also states killed his first wife. The sister confronts the husband on the way to the cemetery… and the gloves are off. Not only were the characters and plot strong, but the author knows how to ratchet up the emotions… all those buttons you want pressed for a satisfying thriller. If you enjoy well-written domestic thrillers, you will most likely enjoy this book.I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
